SUBSTATION ENGINEERING

CAI's substation engineering team is highly experienced in designing additions to existing substations as well as developing new substations from the "ground up." This team has completed hundreds of substation projects, both in the United States and abroad. The projects have ranged from small 2.4 kV distribution substations to large 500 kV bulk transmission facilities, some of which were completed using a turnkey approach, and have incorporated innovative designs to overcome aesthetic or geological concerns. Recent projects have reflected modern trends to utilize transmission assets more efficiently with the installation of phase shifting transformers and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The substation design staff also includes engineers with experience in all aspects of insulated high-voltage cable systems ranging from 5 kV through 345 kV. We have designed installations in city streets as well as submarine crossings. Specialized computer software utilized in developing our designs includes CDEGS Autoground for ground grid and field analysis, USAMP+ for cable ampacity calculations, and numerous programs developed by our staff.
