JACKSON, MI – Engineering design and consulting firm Commonwealth Associates, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been selected by Fagen, Inc., to design an $84 million, 58-megawatt natural gas-fired plant in South Dakota owned by NorthWestern Energy. Fagen was chosen by NorthWestern Energy in April as the EPC (engineer-procure-construct) contractor. The final cost of the project will include the cost of financing and will be determined by construction timelines.

The project will modernize the Huron Generating Station near Huron, South Dakota, by increasing engine efficiency and reducing emissions when it resumes commercial operation in late 2021. Caterpillar, Inc. is supplying the plant’s new reciprocating internal combustion engines, and Commonwealth is being supported locally by Michigan CAT.

“Caterpillar delivers on equipment quality and performance, and Fagen is an outstanding EPC contractor. We are delighted to be able to contribute our generation and design expertise to make this project successful for NorthWestern Energy and those it serves,” said Commonwealth CEO Richard N. Collins, PE.
