Project Overview
As part of the Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) major infrastructure initiative to reconstruct the “North Split” interchange—one of the most heavily trafficked and complex highway junctions in the state—two existing 69 kV transmission lines required relocation to accommodate the new roadway design.
Commonwealth was selected as the Engineer of Record to lead this critical utility relocation effort, ensuring seamless integration with INDOT’s construction schedule and regulatory requirements.
Scope of Services
Our multidisciplinary team provided comprehensive engineering and project management services, including:
- Transmission & Distribution Engineering: Full preliminary and final design of the relocated 69 kV transmission lines, featuring custom steel poles and deep foundations engineered for urban constraints.
- Substation Interface Coordination: Ensured compatibility and continuity between relocated lines and existing substation infrastructure.
- Construction & Commissioning Support: Delivered field engineering, design clarifications, and real-time issue resolution to maintain project momentum.
- Land & Right of Way Planning: Developed a constructability and access plan to facilitate safe and efficient construction in a constrained urban corridor.
- Regulatory & FAA Consultation: Coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure compliance with vertical clearance and safety standards.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborated closely with INDOT and other stakeholders throughout design and construction to align objectives and minimize disruption.
Project Impact
This successful transmission line relocation enabled INDOT to proceed with its transformative highway interchange rebuild while preserving the integrity and reliability of the regional power grid. Commonwealth’s integrated approach ensured that utility infrastructure was not only protected but optimized for long-term performance and regulatory compliance.
